In a new study, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have linked clinical depression to sleep apnea.
Women diagnosed with sleep apnea are more than five times as likely to show signs of clinical depression than women who do not suffer from the disorder. Men are more than twice as likely to to show symptoms of clinical depression.
While the report does not establish a direct cause and effect relationship between apnea and depression, other studies have suggested that interrupted sleep patterns may well contribute to the development of depression. Still other studies have shown that symptoms of depression may decrease with treatment of apnea.
A good night's sleep is exactly that - good. It improves your mood, your memory, your productivity, your safety, your health. In fact it improves your whole quality of life.
Common sleep disorders include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, movement disorders and extreme sleepiness. The Sleep Center staff is well versed in diagnosing and treating a wide array of sleep disorders, which can present themselves differently in different people.
“Until I spent a night at the Sleep Center, I never realized how much my life was being impacted by a sleep disorder. The headaches, the mood swings, the weight gain – I thought it was all work-related stress.”
Sleep disorders can be deadly serious. Seven in 10 Americans have them. Yet 95% of all sleep disorders go untreated and undiagnosed. They cost Americans an estimated $100 billion each year in lost productivity, medical expenses, sick leave and property damage. At the Chesapeake Regional Sleep Center, we understand that helping people quickly overcome their sleep problems impacts the overall health of our entire community. We offer a full range of diagnostic services, treatments and state-of-the-art testing by a team of skilled physicians. So we can help you manage and treat the sleep problems you know about. And more importantly, uncover the ones you don’t.
"My job is stressful and I work long hours. Feeling tired is part of the game, right? So I worked around it. I compensated for it. At night, I didn't just sleep like a baby. I snored like a freight train. And that was exactly my problem."

The good news is most sleep problems and sleep disorders can be treated and managed safely and effectively. After your testing is complete, you can expect a quick interpretation of the results. "I ate right, exercised, and yet my weight and blood pressure kept going up. Turns out, I had a hidden sleep disorder that was interrupting my REM sleep. When I woke up, I'd over eat to make up for the energy I was lacking."
They're all serious health problems. They're also common symptoms of sleep disorders.
What you don't know about sleep problems can truly take your breath away. What you do know can save your life.
"I was a bit apprehensive at first, but the room was more like a hotel room and the staff so reassuring. The diagnosis I received that lead to my treatment has done wonders for my health. And my life."
